Thanks to your pledge to drive with care, the road will be more pleasant for everyone who shares it - and we all get home safely!

Driving to keep everyone on the road safe!

I'LL TAKE THE PLEDGE!

WINNIPEG PLEDGE is an initiative led by Winnipeg drivers who:

  • Put the safety of all ahead of the convenience of a few,
  • Support our collective vision of Winnipeg as a liveable city we choose as home,
  • Acknowledge that much of the advocacy for safer roads has been done by active transportation collectives and individuals who have experienced harm or loss on the road, and that motorists need to do their part as well
  • Reject the polarization of cyclists and the dangerous politics of those who would pit motorists and others on the road against each other.
  • Care about the planet, the community, and each other. Because we know our actions today will have an impact for generations ahead, we pledge to do our part!

Winnipeg streets welcome motorists - cars, taxis, public transit, emergency vehicles - along with cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.

Our city was not designed for the diverse use of road.

This has led to too many collisions and fatalities that should have been avoided.

It will take time to change the physical infrastructure to foster safer traveling for all. As we let the City move forward with ambitious plans for shared and active transportations, we can do our part.

Motorists, especially, are in the driver's seat!

By pledging to drive safely, we show our commitment to making Winnipeg a safe and pleasant city to live in... together.

CARE, SHARE, AND WE'LL ALL GET HOME SAFELY.

THE CASE FOR SLOWING DOWN

Your Speed Determines a Person's Survival Rate

While we often associate speed and highway accidents, we forget that speed is the determining factor of injury and fatality in collisions within city limits as well. Planning and design contribute greatly to reducing risk of harm and to increasing safety. Also effective is every driver's individual commitment to safe, unrushed, calm driving. We're in the driving seat when it comes to safety...

The Surprising Benefit of 30 km/h vs 40 km/hr

That 10 km/h difference multiplies the chances of survival by four. The infographic on Pedestrian Survival Rate by Vehicle Speed, from a World Health Organization (WHO) study on the correlation between speed and pedestrian fatalities worldwide in 2009 demonstrates clearly how we can prevent fatalities by slowing down.  Putting personal safety ahead of our habits of  convenience makes sense!
