Winnipeg streets welcome motorists - cars, taxis, public transit, emergency vehicles, along with cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. As Winnipeg grows and more people share the streets using more diverse forms of transportation, we need to be more active in showing we care about the safety of all. As a driver of a motorized vehicle, I understand that I wield the greatest influence on how everyone experiences the drive. As such, I promise to do my part, by driving safely.
Even when I don't always agree with or understand the posted speed, I'll trust that there's a good reason for it.
I recognize that sharing the road means remembering that I have the most power to cause harm to those who are more vulnerable. I accept their need for space and time may be greater than mine. I will slow down when approaching crosswalks, making a turn, or driving near bike lanes. When passing cyclists, I will ensure there's a space of at least one metre space between us.
While I can't control the weather, traffic, long trains, stalled cars, other people's behaviour, construction, detours... I CAN control my reactions, reset my expectations, and adapt my driving for as pleasant a journey as possible. And so I will.
I will never take the wheel if I'm impaired, even slightly, by drugs or alcohol. I will leave my car parked if I am too tired to drive. I will pull over to a safe place every time if I need to operate my device, even if it is just to check the screen. I will pay attention to my surroundings, including on familiar routes.
